Formally known as the Cathedral Church of St Peter and the Holy and Indivisible Trinity — stands just north of the city and is one of Britain’s most remarkable historic buildings. With origins dating back to around 679, it represents over 1,300 years of Christian faith, heritage, and architectural beauty. 

Founded as a Benedictine abbey, the early monks followed the Rule of St Benedict, welcoming all who came as honoured guests — a tradition of hospitality that continues to this day. 

Over the centuries, the Cathedral has grown into a centre of worship, music, and learning, with its story closely intertwined with the history of Britain. Visitors are drawn not only by its spiritual significance, but also by its breathtaking features, including the magnificent Cloisters. Renowned for their stunning fan vaulting — believed to be the earliest example in England, dating from 1412 — they are among the Cathedral’s most iconic highlights. 

You may also recognise parts of the Cloisters from the Harry Potter film series, where select scenes were filmed, adding an extra touch of magic to this already unforgettable setting.
