Gloucester Cathedral

Gloucester Cathedral

Formally the Cathedral Church of St Peter and the Holy and Indivisible Trinity, stands north of the city. It originated in 678 or 679 with the foundation of an abbey dedicated to Saint Peter. The Cathedral is free to visit and and is also home to Gloucester’s great Cloister, famous for its magnificent fan vaulting, which is believed to be the earliest example in England dating from 1412.

The cloister was made famous with filming for various Harry Potter filmsIn Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stonethe troll who smashed up the girls’ toilet, trapping Hermione, walked along the north side of the Cloisters while Harry and Ron hid in the Lavatorium just around the corner. The south side doubled as a corridor in Gryffindor, with the door at the west end of the passage being the entrance to the Common Room.

Scenes were also filmed here for Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and draw even more visitors here to take pictures and relive the magic of the films.

Gloucester Cathedral is just 15 minutes’ drive from the hotel.
