Gloucester Cathedral

Gloucester Cathedral

Formally the Cathedral Church of St Peter and the Holy and Indivisible Trinity, stands north of the city. It originated in 678 or 679 with the foundation of an abbey dedicated to Saint Peter. The Cathedral is free to visit and and is also home to Gloucester’s great Cloister, famous for its magnificent fan vaulting, which is believed to be the earliest example in England dating from 1412.

The cloister was made famous with filming for various Harry Potter filmsIn Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stonethe troll who smashed up the girls’ toilet, trapping Hermione, walked along the north side of the Cloisters while Harry and Ron hid in the Lavatorium just around the corner. The south side doubled as a corridor in Gryffindor, with the door at the west end of the passage being the entrance to the Common Room.

Scenes were also filmed here for Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and draw even more visitors here to take pictures and relive the magic of the films.

Gloucester Dragonboat Festival – Sunday 10th May 2020

The eagerly-anticipated Dragon Boat Race at Gloucester docks is back for 2020, and is expected to be bigger than ever. With popularity for this wacky race increasing by the year, spectators can expect to be entertained by the goings-on both in and out of the water.

This annual fundraising event will take place on Sunday 10th May 2020, and is a huge affair in the docks’ calendar. Up to 30 teams take to their 40ft long dragon boats and race for victory, with the winning team being presented with the prized Gloucester Dragon Boat Shield.

There’s plenty of fun to be had by those who aren’t racing, with visitors encouraged to get in on the act and don their finest fancy dress outfits in support of the rowers.

As well as a funfair and an array of stalls, there will also be live entertainment throughout the day, guaranteeing an experience which buzzes from start to finish.
